Fandom or Finance: What’s Really Winning This IPL? 🎫
Hiii
What’s up? How’ve you been? With monsoons finally here, I am only too happy to say goodbye to the heat, but I hope we’re all safe with no flooding and other ugly banes of the season.
I’ve seen people spend crazy amounts of money to score tickets to watch a match live with tens of thousands of others, without a place to sit, just to watch their idols play.
Here’s what’s in store for you in this edition:
Monthly Market Review - May 2025
Fandom Or Finance ft. Deepak
Binge Of The Month
Just everything worth 4 mins of your time
‘Sup with the market
May opened with a holiday, but D-Street sprinted anyway, and how! Over the last month, we saw Sensex jump 1.59 %, while Nifty leaped by about 1%. Meanwhile, small-cap exuberance nudged the NSE Midcap index about 1.5 percent higher, and that retail euphoria is alive.
🛡️ Then came Operation Sindoor, making the indices wobble for a week, but it was endearing to see markets price the event as a controlled intervention rather than a prolonged conflict, recovering in the days that followed. ⚖️
The rupee was stuck between 84 and 86, hostage to 💸 dollar and crude spikes, and the currency closed the month roughly 1% weaker. Yet, with FIIs still shopping and macros steady, analysts in a Reuters poll claim new highs remain on the itinerary, so buckle up for turbulence! 🌧️📉
Fandom or Finance: What’s Really Winning This IPL?
Say 👋 to this month’s guest, Deepak (@dkpareek), he offers an amazing mix of content and a binge-worthy podcast. Sayali & Deepak are good friends, so I’ve had the chance to interact with Deepak as well.
I think everyone on the internet now knows how deeply he is in love with cricket. So I thought it’d be fun to hear what he has to say about the money people spend on watching matches live, and here’s his take:
Every April, a familiar electricity runs through India. It is not the weather, it is cricket. The IPL arrives, and with it, the rituals—group chats, fantasy leagues, work debates and stadium selfies. I love it too. But every year, I also watch people spend ₹10,000 or more on a single ticket, while earning ₹50,000 a month. That’s 20 percent of their income—gone before the toss even happens.
If this stings a little, you’re not alone. We’ve all been there. The match, the moment, the madness. But here’s what I’ve learned—the IPL may be about passion, but your finances still need to play defence.
1️⃣ The Game Behind the Game: Why We Spend
No one spends ₹10,000 on a match for the seat. They spend it for a story.
To say I was there.
To feel part of something larger.
To watch Dhoni live or scream when Kohli smashes a six.It is not about numbers, it is about nostalgia, status, and FOMO. Social media wraps it in validation. One post from the stands feels worth it, especially when everyone else is doing it. But emotions are expensive. When they override planning, you are not just buying a ticket, you are mortgaging your peace.
2️⃣ What You’re Really Giving Up
Spending ₹10,000 in one night on a ₹50,000 salary is not indulgent, it is disproportionate. It is money that should ideally go into building your future—emergency funds, SIPs, insurance premiums, or that credit card you keep promising to pay off.
Add travel, snacks, and merchandise, and you are looking at ₹12,000 to ₹15,000—more than what most people invest monthly.
The real question is not “Can I afford it?”
It is “What will I delay because of this?”
And sometimes the cost is not visible.
It is the SIP you skip. The EMI you postponed. The habit you break.3️⃣ Be a Fan. Just a Financially Intelligent One.
Loving the IPL is not the problem. Unplanned spending is.
If watching live is on your bucket list, plan for it. Set aside a match fund like you would for a vacation. Book early. Choose weekday games or less-hyped matches to save up to 40 percent.Better yet, bring the stadium home. Watch with friends. Put that same ₹10,000 into good food, jerseys and memories. The vibe will be real, and so will your peace of mind the next morning.
Binge Of The Month
The residence on Netflix was a great watch, it felt like a show that's straight out of an Agatha Christie novel! The character of Detective Cupp was brilliant, and Uzo Aduba was wonderful! The series was suspenseful, complex, funny, and a must-watch overall!
🍸 Cocktail Pe Charcha
Is it too overwhelming to research & plan your investments? Say no more, we can personally guide you into mixing the perfect financial cocktail to manage your money!
Cricket is joy. But having control over your money is freedom. Both can coexist, if you choose consciously. If your income is tight and your future matters, learn to say no even when the heart screams yes. You are not missing out. You are showing up for your goals. The loudest cheer you’ll hear is the one in your head, when your money is finally playing on your team.
To louder cheers🥂
